My Approach
I feel incredibly fortunate that my first experience with dog training led me to positive reinforcement. Over 20 years ago, my Labrador, Jordan, and I attended a local “obedience” class. It was the best option available at the time, but the methods—based on harsh punishment for non-compliance—didn’t sit right with either of us. We only went once.
At the time, I was a new mother of two, with no plans to become a dog trainer. But something in me knew there had to be a better way. Through reading and research, I discovered choice-based training and began to understand how our behavior shapes our dogs'. That was the beginning of what has become my approach, my passion, and ultimately, my life’s work.
The dog in front of you will help you help them—if you're truly listening and observing. My approach blends science-based learning theory with hands-on experience, continued education, and the invaluable lessons every dog teaches me.
Dogs learn the same way all animals do—including us. When a behavior is rewarded, it’s more likely to happen again. But it’s not always that simple. Sometimes, without realizing it, we reinforce behaviors we don’t want. If a dog finds something rewarding—even if we didn’t intend it—it can quickly become a habit.
Kindness, empathy, and compassion—for both dogs and their people—are values I hold close in this work. Pairing those with up-to-date, evidence-based knowledge creates a foundation for real and lasting change. While no one can offer guarantees in dog training, the knowledge you gain along the way will stay with you.
My approach draws on multiple modalities to encourage voluntary, desired behaviors. I incorporate enrichment techniques like ACE Free Work, which supports dogs in building confidence and resilience, while providing mental engagement for those with busy, working minds. Your dog’s communication will keep you grounded, humble, and always learning.
Every case begins with a thorough Zoom consultation, where we explore your dog’s history, behavior, environment, and previous training experiences. Understanding the “why” behind a behavior is essential to creating meaningful, lasting change. Together, we work to support the whole dog—not just manage a symptom.
